2026 Living Springs Camp

This year Year 5 and 6s from Rawhiti school I went to school camp in Living Springs. We stayed 3 days 2 nights, On Monday we left school at 9am to governors bay. From there we walked all the way to Living Spring after we got to Living Springs. That afternoon we did our first activity it was orienteering something funny that happened while orienteering was we got lost and then spooked by an old man that walked past but we found out he just worked their later on.

The next day we woke up at 7am to Marisa and Jemimah  playing music in our room. After that we started our activities for the day my groups first activity was breakout boxes. Breakout boxes was like an escape room you had to unlock 10 locks on a box to get an obsidian ball, my team came first. Our second activity was bouldering was like rock climbing but without harnesses. our third activity was mountain boarding and then we did archery which is what my picture is about. I made a picture about archery tag because I like shooting my dad. Have you ever played archery tag and did you get shot?

The sun and carbon snake experiment

Today in inquiry we did an experiment to model the sun when it produces gases and heat rays.

Did you know sugar produces energy which is why when people eat too much sugar they get too much energy inside them which makes them hyper active / too much energy / sugar rush.

When we made the experiment the first step was to make a volcano with a hole in the middle. The volcano was made out of sand. Then we poured isopropyl alcohol into the hole, after that we poured 4 spoons of icing sugar and then 1 spoon of baking soda. Lastly we lit a piece of flax and put it in the volcano and the flax caught on fire.

When it was burning I saw black wormy things growing / coming out of the icing sugar.

Near the end of the experiment I smelt super duper woober mooper tooper super gross smelling burnt marshmallows that somehow made me gag.

When the sugar is heated it releases heat, light, energy, reaction, isopropyl alcohol , icing sugar and burnt substances.

Have you ever done a science experiment on the sun?

LEGO TEAM CHALLENGE TERM 1

I made a dinosaur and then a digger, I worked with Isabel, pearl and Aylah.                                                                                 We showed collaboration  and success. I found reading challenging because I was not very good at explaining what to do. I enjoyed building with pearl because we collaborate well,🤩

Holes Create

For literacy, I have been looking at the book holes over the last couple of weeks. For the create Ailia, Jacqueline, Mattis, Geordie, Ashleigh and I dug a 5 foot deep and wide just like in the story holes. I found digging the hole fun because we got to dig for 2hours of the school day. Something I found difficult was waiting my turn to go in the hole because some people took forever. The process took a long time but it was worth it, Here are some photos of the hole and the treasures we found.

Explanation reflection

In Urmis literacy we have been writing explanations. We all wrote an explanation about why it is important to spend time outside,  I made a goal at the start of writing the explanation that I would finish it all in one day, I achieved my goal by sitting next to someone who can help me and by sitting away from my friends. Next time I am going to try to focus on  flow more because I found my explanation at first didn’t flow. I think I have advanced writing because I give a clear and detailed explanation that shows strong understanding. My ideas flow smoothly with clear connections. I use precise and interesting topic of language and I use a range of linking and non linking words. I use a variety of sentence types like simple, compound and complex and I use them well to make my writing more then complex. I also use a range of punctuation, I use scientific words. And finally I guide my reader clearly and I made the explanation easy to read and follow. Have you ever written an explanation? Here is my explanation,

Why is it important to spend time outside?

Introduction:

  • To have a happy and social life
  •   Stay fit and healthy
  • To get off devices

Have you ever been walking on the beach and wondered what are the benefits of going outside and what would happen if we stayed inside. Going outside is very important because nature keeps people healthy and fit but it also helps get kids and adults off devices so they can go play outside or go exercise in the wildlife. Going outside in nature also helps people make friends and have a social and happy life outdoors with wildlife and bugs like ladybugs, grasshoppers and more. And it teaches nature’s science experience for children to have fun and learn in the outdoors.

Firstly, spending time outdoors means you can socialise and connect with other people, and going outdoors in the fresh air can lead to making new friends from different cultures and countries. Going outside also gives you a happy life because outdoors has fresh air and has new wildlife to explore and to learn about. Also going for 1 walk a day can lead you to making so many more friends.

Secondly, leaving the house for a walk or even sitting outside can keep us fit and healthy because the vitamin D in the air keeps us  from suffering rickets, or in severe cases it can cause growth problems, muscle weakening or even brain damage. The vitamin D in the sun is very important to live a happy and healthy life.

Therefore, going outdoors can get adults or children devices like phones, tablets, ipads, computers or even game consoles. Going outside helps children’s brain development work properly and helps them so they don’t go on screens all day long. Something like going on a trampoline or even playing a sport like football, netball, basketball, rugby league, gymnastics  or volleyball can keep kids from going on screens all day long.

In conclusion, going outside is a great thing to do and the sun’s vitamin D is very important for human life and mental health. So next time you are feeling bored at home go for a walk around outside.

Eastle Reflection

For literacy Urmis  literacy group are writing eastles I wrote about how to play touch rugby the structure of the eastles are introduction, 1 paragraph, second paragraph, third paragraph and conclusion here it is,

How To Play Touch Rugby,

Have you ever wondered if touch rugby was the sport for you?  Well here are some facts on how to play touch rugby. First of all, wear rugby boots with sprigs, because the sprigs keep people from falling and slipping. Did you know 89% of people wear boots when playing touch rugby? The main aim of the game is to get the rugby ball over the line as many times as your team can, without getting touched by another player on the opposing team. Each game lasts 45mins not including half time and they have 20 mins in the first half and 25 in the second. Each try earns the team who got the try 1 point and 2 for girls if they got the try.

To start off the game the captain of both teams plays paper, scissors rock and the winner can pick if their team starts with the ball or not. Once that is done one player stands in the middle of the field and taps the ball on their foot and they run until another player from the opposing team touches them, the person who has the ball also has the option to pass it to another player and then they can run. After 5 touches the ball gets handed over to the other team so they can have 5 runs. Sometimes players drop the ball when that happens the team who dropped the ball hands it over and then they try to get more trys.

Some rules in touch rugby are no forward passes, off side, violence and out are the most strict rules in touch rugby. Forward pass is when you pass the ball forward and not back, Off side is when someone gets a touch everyone has to move back if you don’t move back and out is when you go out of bounds on the field.  There is no kicking, punching and hitting in games or it’s just sore losing . Also try to make sure you don’t kick the ball because in touch rugby you’re not supposed to kick the ball.

Touch rugby is a good social sport because you can meet new people and have different refs and different teams you’re opposing each time and you get to explore the world when you’re a national player. And sometimes you meet better players and they can teach you how to get better.

So next time you’re finding it boring at home, grab a rugby ball and give touch rugby a go but just remember to follow the rules and don’t cause violence. Try to get some trys for your team.

And most importantly have fun.
